～てからでないと／～てからでなければ— Not Until You First

Expresses that unless X is done first, the second thing cannot happen or is impossible. It sets up a required precondition, and the second clause is usually negative or expresses impossibility. Emphasizes strict sequence: X must come before anything else.

  • 上司に確認してからでないと、返事ができません。

    Joushi ni kakunin shite kara denai to, henji ga dekimasen.

    I can't give an answer until I first check with my boss.

    確認して + からでないと = the reply is impossible without first checking

  • 実際に見てからでなければ、決められない。

    Jissai ni mite kara denakereba, kimerarenai.

    I can't decide until I've actually seen it first.

    見て + からでなければ = deciding is impossible without seeing first

  • お金を払ってからでないと、中に入れません。

    Okane o haratte kara denai to, naka ni hairemasen.

    You can't go inside unless you pay first.

    払って + からでないと = entry is blocked until payment is made

Usage notes · 注意

  • The main clause is almost always negative or expresses inability (～ない, ～できない).
  • ～てからでないと and ～てからでなければ are interchangeable; the latter is slightly more formal.
  • Stresses that the first action is an unavoidable precondition.

Commonly confused with

The JLPT rarely asks whether you recognise a pattern — it asks which of several similar patterns fits. These are the ones ～てからでないと／～てからでなければ is tested against.

vs～てから

～てから simply orders two actions ('after ~'); ～てからでないと adds that the second is impossible unless the first is done first.

vs～ないと

Plain ～ないと states a needed condition; ～てからでないと specifically frames a completed prior action as the precondition.
