Stroke order looks like calligraphy pedantry until you realise what it is actually for. It is a compression algorithm: eight rules that let you write any of 2,000+ characters correctly without memorising 2,000 separate procedures. Learn the rules and you can write kanji you have never seen before — including the ones you meet for the first time in an exam.
Why bother, honestly
Three real reasons. Handwriting recognition on phones and dictionaries is built on stroke order — wrong order, wrong lookup. Characters written in the correct order come out balanced, and in the wrong order come out subtly deformed. And handwriting a character in order is a far stronger memory encoding than looking at it, which is why it survives as a study method.
The eight rules, in priority order
When rules conflict, the earlier one usually wins. That ordering is the part most guides leave out, and it is what makes the set actually usable.
Top to bottom
The strongest rule. Horizontal layers stack downward.
三 — the three horizontals are written top, middle, bottom.
Left to right
Second strongest. Components on the left are written before those on the right.
川 — left stroke, middle, then right.
Horizontal before vertical when they cross
The single most useful rule for beginners.
十 — the horizontal comes first, then the vertical through it.
Enclosures before their contents
Build the box, then fill it — but leave the bottom of the box for last.
国 — left side and top of the frame, then 玉 inside, then the bottom line seals it.
Centre before symmetrical wings
When a shape has a middle and two balanced sides, the middle leads.
小 — centre vertical, then left, then right.
Left-falling before right-falling
For diagonal pairs, the stroke going down-left comes first.
人 — the left-falling stroke, then the right-falling one.
A piercing vertical or horizontal comes last
A stroke running through the whole character seals it.
中 — the box first, the long vertical through it last. 母 ends with its piercing horizontal.
Top-right dots last
Minor marks and top-right dots are afterthoughts.

Practise stroke orderWorked example: 書 (to write)
Ten strokes, and it looks intimidating until you apply the rules in order. Top to bottom gives you the overall plan; horizontal-before-vertical resolves the crossings; the piercing vertical waits.
- The upper section first (rule 1 — top to bottom).
- Within it, horizontals before the vertical that crosses them (rule 3).
- The long vertical that runs down through the upper section comes after those (rule 7).
- Then the 日 component at the bottom: left vertical, top and right frame, inner horizontal, bottom line sealing it (rule 4 — the box closes last).
No memorisation of “書 is stroke pattern #4,821” required. The rules generated it. That is the whole point.
Exceptions worth knowing
- 右 and 左 are written differently despite looking alike. 右 starts with the short slanting stroke (ノ) and then the horizontal; 左 starts with the horizontal and then the slant. Classic exam-adjacent trivia.
- 王 vs 玉 — the added dot in 玉 comes last, per rule 8.
- 必 defies the centre-first instinct entirely. Just learn this one.
- Radicals carry their own order. Once you know 氵 (three strokes, top-down) or 亻 (two strokes), every character containing them inherits it for free.
Learn radicals, not characters
This is the leverage. Roughly 200 radicals compose the entire kanji set, and each has a fixed internal stroke order. Learn the 40 most common radicals with their orders and you have pre-solved a large fraction of every character you will ever meet.

Does the JLPT test stroke order?
Not directly. The JLPT is entirely multiple-choice — there is no handwriting section at any level, so nobody will ever mark your stroke order.
It still helps you pass, indirectly and substantially. Writing characters by hand in the correct order is one of the most effective ways to make 問題2 表記 questions easy, because those questions ask you to distinguish visually similar characters. Learners who only ever read kanji develop fuzzy visual memories; learners who write them notice that 待 and 持 differ in one radical, because their hand knows the difference.
Reading-only study
Fast to accumulate, weak at discrimination. You will recognise many characters and confuse the similar ones under time pressure.
Writing practice
Slower per character, far stronger discrimination. You do not need to write all 2,000 — writing the confusable ones is where the return is.
A practical routine
- Learn the eight rules once. An afternoon. Do not memorise per-character orders.
- Learn 40 radicals with their internal order. A week or two. This is the highest-leverage kanji work there is.
- Write each new kanji five times, saying the reading aloud. Five is enough; twenty is procrastination.
- Write the confusable pairs together. 待/持, 語/話, 校/枚. Writing them adjacently is what fixes the difference.
- Then stop writing and start reading. Writing builds the representation; reading volume is what makes it fast.
