Nearly every JLPT N5 vocabulary list online tells you the same thing: “about 800 words.” It is a round number that gets repeated because it appeared in an old official guide, and almost nobody publishes the actual list. Here is what the N5 vocabulary load really looks like, how it breaks down by word type, and the order that gets you through it fastest.
The short answer
The JLPT publishes no official word list — it was withdrawn in 2010. Every list you find is reconstructed from past papers. Ours contains 726 N5 words, and the honest framing is this: 726 well-chosen words covers N5 comfortably. The gap between “726” and “800” is mostly counting method — whether you count て-form variants, numbers, and counter combinations as separate entries.
Why there is no official list any more
Before 2010, the Japan Foundation published explicit vocabulary and kanji lists for each level. When the test was redesigned into the current N1–N5 structure, those lists were deliberately retired. The stated reasoning was that publishing a finite list encouraged rote memorisation of the list rather than actual language ability.
The practical consequence: every “official N5 vocabulary list” on the internet is somebody’s reconstruction from past papers and textbook corpora. They mostly agree, and they differ at the edges. That is why counts range from roughly 650 to 900 depending on whose list you read.
What this means for you
Do not chase a specific number. Two lists of 700 words that overlap by 90% will both get you through N5. What matters far more is whether you can recall them in reading speed, and whether you know the readings — which is what the test actually measures.
How N5 vocabulary breaks down
Grouping by part of speech tells you where the work actually is. Learners consistently underestimate how much of N5 is verbs and adjectives — the parts that conjugate.

Alphabetical order and textbook chapter order are both bad. What works is frequency weighted by how soon a word unlocks other words. Roughly:
- The ~40 function words first. これ, それ, あれ, ここ, どこ, いつ, なに, だれ, いくら. These appear in almost every question on the paper. A week on these pays for itself.
- Time and number words next. Days, months, counters, 今日/明日/昨日. Listening section 問題2 leans on these heavily, and they are pure memorisation with no grammar attached.
- The 60 highest-frequency verbs. 行く, 来る, 見る, 食べる, 飲む, する, ある, いる. Learn each with its group so conjugation comes free later.
- Adjective pairs. 大きい/小さい, 高い/安い, 新しい/古い. Pairs stick better than singles because the contrast is the memory hook.
- Everything else, by theme. Food, transport, family, weather, school. Thematic batches let you build sentences immediately, which is what moves words from recognition into recall.
Recognition is not enough — and this is where most people fail
Here is the trap. You review a flashcard, see 電気, think “electricity, yes I know that,” and move on. Then on the paper you meet 問題1 漢字読み, which asks you to choose the correct reading from four options: てんき, でんぎ, てんぎ, でんき. All four look plausible. You knew the meaning and still lose the mark.
Meaning
電気 = electricity, light. The easiest layer, and the one flashcards over-train.
Reading
でんき — not てんき (weather). Voicing and length are exactly what 問題1 tests.
Use
電気を消してください. Knowing the particle and verb it travels with is what reading questions need.
Every N5 word needs all three layers. That is why audio matters more than it looks: hearing でんき said aloud a dozen times fixes the voicing in a way that reading romaji never will.
Ten words that trip up nearly everyone
These are the pairs that show up in 問題1 and 問題2 precisely because they are confusable.

| 前 / 先 | まえ before/front vs さき ahead. Both translate loosely as 'before'. |
| 少ない / 小さい | すくない few in number vs ちいさい small in size. |
| good: いい / よい | Same word, いい is spoken, よい is written and conjugates. |
A realistic three-month schedule
726 words in 12 weeks is about 61 new words a week, or 9 a day — which sounds trivial and is not, because reviews accumulate. A schedule that survives contact with real life:
- Weeks 1–2: function words, numbers, time. No new grammar. Get the kana fully automatic if it is not already.
- Weeks 3–6: 15 new words a day, thematic batches, plus the N5 grammar points that use them. Write one sentence per new verb.
- Weeks 7–10: drop to 10 new a day and start timed reading. This is where recognition converts to recall.
- Weeks 11–12: no new words at all. Full mock papers under exam timing, then review only what you got wrong.
That last fortnight is the one people skip, and it is the one that moves scores most. Sitting a full timed paper exposes pacing problems that no amount of flashcard review will.

A PDF is fine for a first read-through and useless for retention. The problem is that a PDF cannot test you, cannot track what you have forgotten, and cannot say a word aloud. If you like paper, print the list to skim it — but do your actual reviewing somewhere that shows you a word, waits, and then tells you whether you were right.
Anki is the classic answer and still a good one. The tradeoff is that you spend your first week configuring decks rather than learning Japanese, and shared N5 decks vary wildly in quality — many have no audio, and a surprising number have wrong readings.

N5 vocabulary is the least intellectually difficult part of learning Japanese and the part most people quietly fail at, because it rewards consistency over insight. 726 words, three layers each, twelve weeks. Nothing clever required — but the reading layer and the timed practice are not optional, and those are exactly the two things a static word list cannot give you.
