N5 and N4 feel like progress. N3 feels like starting over. This is the level where the largest number of learners stall permanently — not because it is unreasonably hard, but because everything that worked for N5 and N4 stops working, and most people respond by doing more of it. Here is what actually changes, and what to do differently.
The size of the jump
There are no official lists any more, but common estimates put N5 at roughly 700–800 words and 100–125 kanji (LenGaki’s N5 lists have 726 words and 124 kanji). N4 roughly doubles it. N3 asks for around 3,700 words and 650 kanji in total — and it was inserted between the old Level 3 and Level 2 precisely because that gap was too wide to cross in one step. You are not imagining the difficulty.
What actually changes at N3
1. Vocabulary stops being concrete
N5 and N4 vocabulary is largely physical: 水, 学校, 食べる, 大きい. Things you can point at or do. N3 vocabulary is abstract — 影響 (influence), 状況 (situation), 判断 (judgement), 意識 (consciousness). You cannot picture them, so the mnemonic tricks that carried you through N5 quietly stop working.
Worse, they arrive in near-synonym clusters. 状況, 状態, 事情 and 場合 all translate roughly as “situation.” N3 tests which one belongs in a given sentence.
2. Grammar becomes nuance rather than structure
N4 grammar changes what a sentence means — potential, passive, conditional. N3 grammar mostly changes how a sentence feels: 〜わけだ, 〜みたい, 〜っぽい, 〜ばかり, 〜どころか. There is rarely a clean English equivalent, which makes translation-based study fail.
3. Reading passages get genuinely long
N5 reading is a notice and two short paragraphs. N3 gives you multi-paragraph argumentative text where the question is about the author’s attitude or the function of a particular sentence. Reading speed becomes the binding constraint — many people who know enough Japanese for N3 simply run out of time.
4. Kanji arrive without furigana
The training wheels come off. At N3 you are expected to read compounds cold, which means knowing on’yomi properly rather than recognising words by shape.

The trap
At N5 and N4, flashcards work. Word on one side, meaning on the other, review until it sticks. It works because the mapping is roughly one-to-one: 水 is water, 食べる is to eat.
At N3 the mapping is many-to-many. Four words mean “situation”; one word covers three English concepts. A flashcard that says 状況 = situation teaches you something that is true and useless, because the exam asks which of four near-synonyms fits. The fix is not more cards — it is different input.
What works instead
- Learn words in sentences, never alone. A word’s meaning at N3 is mostly its collocations — what it appears next to. 影響を受ける, 影響を与える. Learn the phrase and the word comes with it.
- Study near-synonyms as contrast sets. Never learn 状況 by itself. Learn 状況/状態/事情/場合 together, with one example each, and the distinctions become the memory hooks rather than the obstacle.
- Read volume, at a level slightly below comfortable. This is the single biggest lever at N3, and the thing most learners skip because it feels less productive than flashcards. Graded readers, NHK Easy News, manga with furigana. Twenty minutes daily beats any app.
- Attack on’yomi systematically. With no furigana, compound reading is the bottleneck. If you know 生 as セイ, you can guess 生活, 学生, 先生, 生産. Knowing it only as いきる gets you none of them.
- Time every reading exercise. N3 failure is often a speed failure, not a knowledge failure, and untimed practice hides that completely.
Is it worth skipping N4 and going straight to N3?
It depends on what the certificate is for. For the Specified Skilled Worker (i) visa, N4 (or the JFT-Basic test) is the Japanese requirement in most fields, so sit it — our SSW visa guide has the details. For most office jobs and university requirements, N3 is the first level that carries real weight, and N2 is the common professional bar; there, sitting N4 costs a fee and a day and proves something few employers care about.
But do not skip the N4 material. N3 grammar assumes fluent command of causative, passive, conditional and giving/receiving. Skipping the exam is a scheduling decision; skipping the content is how people end up stuck at N3 for two years.

From a solid N4, N3 typically takes six to nine months of consistent study. From a shaky N4, it takes longer, and the first two months should be spent repairing N4.
Months 1–3
Vocabulary and kanji volume. 20 new words and 5 new kanji daily, always in sentences. Begin daily reading.
Months 4–6
Grammar in contrast sets. Reading length increases. Add listening at full speed — N3 audio is noticeably faster than N4.
Months 7–9
Timed papers, section by section. Fix whichever section the mock exposes. Stop adding new material in the final fortnight.
The encouraging part
N3 is the last level that feels like a wall. N2 is more of the same, larger — more words, longer passages, no new conceptual leap. The abstract-vocabulary habit and the reading speed you build for N3 are exactly what N2 needs, so the effort compounds rather than resetting.
Put differently: N3 is where you stop studying Japanese and start reading Japanese. That transition is uncomfortable, it takes months, and it is the last genuinely hard thing about the JLPT ladder.

N3 asks for roughly five times N5’s vocabulary, drops furigana, and shifts from structural grammar to nuance. Flashcards stop being sufficient because the word-to-meaning mapping stops being one-to-one. Learn in sentences, study near-synonyms as contrast sets, read every day, and attack on’yomi systematically. It takes six to nine months from a solid N4 — and it is the last level that will feel like this.
