～に関して／～に関する — Regarding; Concerning
A formal way to indicate the topic or subject matter that something concerns. に関して modifies verbs ('regarding X, ...'), while に関する modifies nouns ('X-related ...'). It is a more formal equivalent of について, common in writing and business.
Structure
[Noun] + に関して (+ verb) / [Noun] + に関する + [Noun]
Examples
この件に関して、詳しく説明します。
Kono ken ni kanshite, kuwashiku setsumei shimasu.
Regarding this matter, I will explain in detail.
件 (matter) + に関して marks the topic of the explanation
環境に関する研究をしている。
Kankyou ni kansuru kenkyuu wo shite iru.
I am doing research related to the environment.
に関する modifies the noun 研究, 'environment-related research'
その問題に関して質問があります。
Sono mondai ni kanshite shitsumon ga arimasu.
I have a question concerning that problem.
問題 (problem) + に関して marks what the question is about
• Register: formal/written; more formal than について. • に関して modifies verbs; に関する attaches before a noun. • Marks the subject matter/topic, not the location or occasion.
Commonly confused with
The JLPT rarely asks whether you recognise a pattern — it asks which of several similar patterns fits. These are the ones ～に関して／～に関する is tested against.
vs について
に関して is more formal and slightly broader in scope, while について is the neutral everyday word for 'about/concerning'.
vs において
に関して marks the topic something is about, whereas において marks the place, time, or field in which something occurs.
