How to Actually Ride the Shinkansen

Buy the Ticket
Go to a Midori-no-Madoguchi (Green Ticket Office) or a machine. You will receive TWO tickets: a Basic Fare ticket and a Super Express supplement ticket.
Pass the Gates
Insert BOTH tickets together into the Shinkansen ticket gate at the same time. The machine will punch them and spit them out. Grab them!
Find your Car
Look at your ticket. Are you 'Reserved' (Shiteiseki) or 'Unreserved' (Jiyuseki)? Unreserved cars are usually Cars 1-3. Stand in the queue lines painted on the platform.
Oversized Baggage Rules
If your suitcase is massive (over 160cm total dimensions), you MUST book a specific 'Seat with Oversized Baggage Area' at the back of the car. Otherwise, you will be fined.

If you are paying for an individual ticket, always book the Nozomi. It is the fastest Shinkansen and skips minor stations (Tokyo to Kyoto takes 2h 15m).
