These two books teach almost identical material. Every argument you have read about which is “better” is really an argument about how you study, not about the books. Here is the difference that actually decides it, and the four smaller ones worth knowing.

The deciding question
Do you have a teacher? If no — Genki. If yes, or you are enrolling at a language school — Minna no Nihongo. Everything below is detail on top of that one answer.
They cover the same ground
Genki I and II together, and Minna no Nihongo I and II together, both land you at roughly the same place: comfortably through N5 and most of N4. Both teach the same particles, the same verb groups, the same て-form, the same conditionals. If you finish either pair you will not have a gap the other would have filled.
So the comparison is not about coverage. It is about who the book was written for.
The real difference: who supplies the explanation
| Genki | Minna no Nihongo | |
|---|---|---|
| Explanations | In English, on the page | In a separate translation book |
| Main text language | Mixed English and Japanese | Japanese only |
| Designed for | Self-study and university courses | Classroom with a teacher |
| Books to buy | Textbook + workbook | Textbook + translation + workbook |
| Register taught | Student and everyday | Workplace and adult |
| Pace | Gentler, more hand-holding | Faster, assumes support |
| Audio | Included / downloadable | Included / downloadable |
That third row is the whole thing. Minna no Nihongo omits English from the main text on purpose — a teacher is meant to fill that space. Working alone, you supply it yourself by flipping between two books, and the friction is real. It is not that you cannot do it. It is that the odds you are still doing it in month four are lower.
The four smaller differences
1. Register
Genki is written around university students, so the example sentences are about classes, part-time jobs and weekend plans. Minna no Nihongo is written around adults working in Japan, so it leans on office situations and polite forms earlier. If you are moving to Japan for work, Minna’s vocabulary will be more immediately useful.
2. Cost
Minna no Nihongo needs the translation and grammatical notes volume to be usable in English, so the real entry price is two books before you have added the workbook. Genki is one book plus its workbook. Worth pricing both properly rather than comparing the headline number.
3. Kanji
Genki introduces kanji gradually with its own reading sections. Minna no Nihongo largely leaves kanji to a companion book. Neither is sufficient on its own — you will want a dedicated kanji book at some point either way.
4. What comes after
Both have a natural sequel: Genki II, or Minna no Nihongo II. Neither strands you. Beyond that pair, most learners move to Shin Kanzen Master or So-matome for N3, and the textbook you started with stops mattering.
The books
Genki I (3rd Edition)
N5Banno et al.
The default first textbook in most university courses. Dialogue-led, English explanations, workbook sold separately.
- Best for:
- Learning alone in English.
- Our verdict:
- Choose this if nobody is teaching you. The English explanations are the feature, not a compromise, and the workbook is not optional.
Minna no Nihongo I
N5All-Japanese main text with a separate translation book. Standard in Japanese language schools.
- Best for:
- Language school students, and anyone moving to Japan for work.
- Our verdict:
- Better material for adult and workplace Japanese, but budget for the translation volume as well or the main text is close to unusable in English.
Both books teach the same grammar points. All 445 from N5 to N2 are on LenGaki with examples and a comparison against the patterns they are most often confused with — useful for checking what a chapter actually covered.
See the grammar listIf you still cannot decide
Buy Genki. Not because it is better in the abstract, but because the failure mode of choosing it is mild — you learn slightly more casual Japanese — while the failure mode of choosing Minna no Nihongo without a teacher is that you stop. Optimise against quitting, because quitting is what actually happens.

Same material, different assumptions about who is standing next to you. Genki explains itself; Minna no Nihongo expects a teacher to. Pick on that, ignore the rest, and put the energy you saved into finishing whichever one you bought.
