予定だ (よていだ) — Planned / Scheduled to
Expresses a concrete plan or schedule. More definite than つもり (personal intention) — 予定 refers to officially arranged or fixed plans.
Structure
[Verb dictionary / Noun + の] + 予定だ/です
Examples
来週、東京に出張する予定です。
Raishuu, Toukyou ni shucchou suru yotei desu.
I'm scheduled to go on a business trip to Tokyo next week.
出張する (business trip) + 予定です
その会議は月曜日の予定です。
Sono kaigi wa getsuyoubi no yotei desu.
The meeting is planned for Monday.
月曜日の + 予定です
飛行機は午後三時に着く予定です。
Hikouki wa gogo sanji ni tsuku yotei desu.
The plane is scheduled to arrive at 3 p.m.
着く (arrive, dictionary form) + 予定です — a fixed schedule
• Key Concept: 予定だ (concrete scheduled plan) vs つもりだ (personal intention): 行く予定 (scheduled to go) vs 行くつもり (intend to go). • Note: 予定通り = as scheduled. • Note: 予定が変わった = the plan changed.
Commonly confused with
The JLPT rarely asks whether you recognise a pattern — it asks which of several similar patterns fits. These are the ones 予定だ is tested against.
vs つもりだ
予定だ is an objectively arranged/fixed schedule; つもりだ is a personal intention that hasn't necessarily been formalized (行く予定 = it's on the schedule vs 行くつもり = I intend to).
vs 〜ことになっている
予定だ states a plan; ことになっている stresses that the arrangement was decided by circumstances/others and is now an established rule or fixed arrangement.
