わけではない— Not Exactly

Softly partially denies something — 'it's not that...', 'it doesn't mean that...', or 'not necessarily'. It corrects a possible misunderstanding or qualifies a statement, leaving room for exceptions. Frequently used to say that while something may look a certain way, the full truth is more nuanced.

[Verb / い-adj plain form] + わけではない ／ [な-adj な・という / Noun という] + わけではない

Examples · 例文

  • 毎日料理をするが、料理が好きなわけではない。

    Mainichi ryouri o suru ga, ryouri ga suki na wake de wa nai.

    I cook every day, but it's not that I like cooking.

    好きな + わけではない denies the assumption that cooking daily means liking it.

  • お金が全てというわけではない。

    Okane ga subete to iu wake de wa nai.

    It's not that money is everything.

    Noun + という + わけではない softly rejects an overstatement.

  • 彼のことが嫌いなわけではないが、少し苦手だ。

    Kare no koto ga kirai na wake de wa nai ga, sukoshi nigate da.

    It's not that I dislike him, but I'm a bit uncomfortable with him.

    嫌いな + わけではない qualifies the statement, leaving nuance.

Usage notes · 注意

  • Casual contraction: わけじゃない.
  • Use to prevent a listener from jumping to an overly strong conclusion.
  • Register: neutral; frequent in everyday explanation.

Commonly confused with

The JLPT rarely asks whether you recognise a pattern — it asks which of several similar patterns fits. These are the ones わけではない is tested against.

vsわけがない

わけがない flatly denies any possibility ('no way'), while わけではない only partially denies ('not exactly / not necessarily').

vsというものではない

というものではない refutes a general belief or principle, whereas わけではない qualifies a specific situation to avoid misunderstanding.
