～はもちろん— Not to Mention

Means 'X, of course / not to mention X, but also Y.' It presents X as an obvious given, then adds Y as an additional (often less expected) item. Common and natural in both speech and writing. The second element usually takes も.

  • 彼は英語はもちろん、日本語も話せる。

    Kare wa eigo wa mochiron, nihongo mo hanaseru.

    He can speak Japanese as well, not to mention English.

    英語はもちろん presents English as obvious, then adds Japanese

  • この店は味はもちろん、雰囲気もいい。

    Kono mise wa aji wa mochiron, fun'iki mo ii.

    This restaurant has great taste, not to mention a nice atmosphere.

    はもちろん treats taste as a given and adds atmosphere

  • 週末はもちろん、平日も忙しい。

    Shuumatsu wa mochiron, heijitsu mo isogashii.

    I'm busy on weekdays, not to mention weekends.

    はもちろん marks weekends as the obvious case, adding weekdays

Usage notes · 注意

  • Register: neutral; usable in everyday conversation.
  • The first item (X) is treated as self-evident; the second (Y) is the added point.
  • もちろんのこと is a slightly more formal variant.

Commonly confused with

The JLPT rarely asks whether you recognise a pattern — it asks which of several similar patterns fits. These are the ones ～はもちろん is tested against.

vs～はもとより

はもとより has the same meaning but is more formal/literary; はもちろん is the everyday version.

vs～ばかりでなく

ばかりでなく neutrally lists two items; はもちろん frames the first as an obvious given before adding the second.
