～といっても— Even Though I Say

• 料理ができるといっても、卵焼きぐらいです。

  Ryouri ga dekiru to itte mo, tamagoyaki gurai desu.

  I say I can cook, but it's only about making rolled omelets.

  といっても lowers the expectation raised by '料理ができる'.

• 日本語を勉強したといっても、たった三か月だけです。

  Nihongo o benkyou shita to itte mo, tatta sankagetsu dake desu.

  Even though I say I studied Japanese, it was only three months.

  といっても clarifies that the studying was minimal.

• 社長といっても、社員は私一人だけです。

  Shachou to itte mo, shain wa watashi hitori dake desu.

  Even though I'm called the president, I'm the only employee.

  といっても attaches to the noun 社長 to deflate its grand impression.

• ・The second clause typically shrinks or qualifies the first ('but only ~', 'just ~').
• ・Frequently paired with だけ, ぐらい, or たった to stress how modest the reality is.
• ・Register: neutral, very common in speech.
