～末(に)／の末(に)— After All Was Said and Done

• さんざん悩んだ末に、留学を決めた。

  Sanzan nayanda sue ni, ryuugaku o kimeta.

  After agonizing over it endlessly, I decided to study abroad.

  悩んだ末に = following a long process of worrying, a decision was reached

• 長い議論の末、結論が出た。

  Nagai giron no sue, ketsuron ga deta.

  After a long discussion, a conclusion was reached.

  議論の末 (noun + の末) = as the final result of the discussion

• 苦労した末に、ついに夢を実現させた。

  Kurou shita sue ni, tsuini yume o jitsugen saseta.

  After much hardship, he finally realized his dream.

  苦労した末に emphasizes the drawn-out struggle preceding the result

• ・Requires a process that takes time and effort — not for instant results.
• ・The result is often a weighty decision or a hard-won outcome.
• ・末に and 末 are interchangeable; の末 follows nouns.
