〜方(かた) — Way / Method of doing (how-to)

• 漢字の書き方を教えてください。

  Kanji no kakikata wo oshiete kudasai.

  Please teach me how to write kanji.

  書き (write, stem) + 方 = writing method

• この料理の作り方は簡単です。

  Kono ryouri no tsukurikata wa kantan desu.

  The way to make this dish is easy.

  作り (make, stem) + 方 = way of making

• 彼の話し方が好きです。

  Kare no hanashikata ga suki desu.

  I like the way he speaks.

  話し (speak, stem) + 方 = focus on manner, not content

• ・Particle shift: with 〜方 the object marker を usually becomes の because the whole phrase is now a compound noun (パンを食べる → パンの食べ方).
• ・Abstract use: describes personal style — 生き方 (way of life), 考え方 (way of thinking).
• ・Works with verbs that involve a process/manner.

Commonly confused with
