Attaches to a verb stem to make a noun meaning the 'way,' 'method,' or 'manner' of performing that action. It shifts focus from the action itself to how it is done.
[Verb ます-stem] + 方 (かた)
漢字の書き方を教えてください。
Kanji no kakikata wo oshiete kudasai.
Please teach me how to write kanji.
書き (write, stem) + 方 = writing method
この料理の作り方は簡単です。
Kono ryouri no tsukurikata wa kantan desu.
The way to make this dish is easy.
作り (make, stem) + 方 = way of making
彼の話し方が好きです。
Kare no hanashikata ga suki desu.
I like the way he speaks.
話し (speak, stem) + 方 = focus on manner, not content
• Particle shift: with 〜方 the object marker を usually becomes の because the whole phrase is now a compound noun (パンを食べる → パンの食べ方). • Abstract use: describes personal style — 生き方 (way of life), 考え方 (way of thinking). • Works with verbs that involve a process/manner.
The JLPT rarely asks whether you recognise a pattern — it asks which of several similar patterns fits. These are the ones 〜方 is tested against.
どうやって asks 'how' as an adverb in a question; 〜方 turns 'how to X' into a noun you can use as a topic or object (書き方を教える).
〜方 names the method as a noun; 〜ように describes doing something in a certain manner/purpose and modifies verbs.
