Attached to an emotion word to mean 'extremely / to the utmost.' It expresses that the speaker feels a certain emotion (loneliness, joy, envy, etc.) to the highest possible degree. It is an emphatic, somewhat literary way of saying 'I couldn't be more X.'
[い-adj / な-adj な / Noun の] + かぎりだ
一人で留守番なんて、寂しいかぎりだ。
Hitori de rusuban nante, sabishii kagiri da.
Being left to watch the house all alone — I couldn't feel lonelier.
寂しい (い-adj) + かぎりだ intensifies the emotion to its extreme.
君に再会できて、うれしいかぎりです。
Kimi ni saikai dekite, ureshii kagiri desu.
I'm overjoyed to be able to meet you again.
うれしい (い-adj) + かぎりです = 'as happy as can be.'
こんな賞をいただけるとは、光栄なかぎりです。
Konna shō o itadakeru to wa, kōei na kagiri desu.
To receive such an award — I'm honored beyond words.
光栄な (な-adj + な) + かぎりです expresses maximal honor.
• Only attaches to emotion/feeling words (寂しい, うれしい, 心細い, 羨ましい, 残念, 光栄). • Register: formal/literary; common in speeches and polite expressions of feeling. • Distinct from conditional かぎり(は) 'as long as' despite the same word.
The JLPT rarely asks whether you recognise a pattern — it asks which of several similar patterns fits. These are the ones ~かぎりだ is tested against.
The conditional かぎり(は) means 'as long as (a condition holds)'; かぎりだ attaches to an emotion adjective to mean 'extremely,' with no conditional sense.
てたまらない ('unbearably X') is more colloquial and covers desires/sensations; かぎりだ is formal, literary, and limited to expressing emotion at its peak.
