よ / ね— Sentence-Ending Emotion Markers

Sentence-final particles that convey the speaker's stance toward the listener's knowledge: よ asserts new information; ね seeks shared feeling or agreement.

Examples · 例文

  • このラーメンは辛いよ。

    Kono raamen wa karai yo.

    This ramen is spicy, you know.

    よ presents information the listener didn't have.

  • 今日の風は冷たいね。

    Kyou no kaze wa tsumetai ne.

    The wind is cold today, isn't it?

    ね reaches out to the listener for agreement/validation.

  • 明日は休みだよね？

    Ashita wa yasumi da yo ne?

    Tomorrow is a day off, right?

    よね = speaker is fairly sure (よ) but kindly checks for confirmation (ね).

Usage notes · 注意

  • よ: "I know this and you may not — I'm telling you."
  • ね: "I feel/know this and assume you do too — right?"
  • Flow Warning: Overusing よ sounds pushy; overusing ね sounds needy.

Commonly confused with

The JLPT rarely asks whether you recognise a pattern — it asks which of several similar patterns fits. These are the ones よ is tested against.

vsよ vs ね

よ pushes NEW info toward a listener who doesn't know it; ね assumes SHARED knowledge/feeling and invites agreement.

vsよね (combined)

よね layers both: the speaker is quite certain (よ) yet softly asks the listener to confirm (ね) — common for checking facts you already believe.
