～からには— Now That, Since (With Resolve)

Indicates that because a fact is established, a matching determination, obligation, or expectation naturally follows. It means 'now that / since X, then of course Y.' The second clause typically expresses strong resolve, duty, or judgment (must, should, will definitely).

Examples · 例文

  • やると決めたからには、最後までやる。

    Yaru to kimeta kara ni wa, saigo made yaru.

    Now that I've decided to do it, I'll do it to the very end.

    決めた (plain past) + からには followed by the resolve to finish.

  • 日本に住むからには、日本語を学ぶべきだ。

    Nihon ni sumu kara ni wa, nihongo o manabu beki da.

    Since you're going to live in Japan, you ought to learn Japanese.

    住む (plain) + からには leads to the obligation べきだ.

  • 約束したからには、必ず守ってほしい。

    Yakusoku shita kara ni wa, kanarazu mamotte hoshii.

    Now that you've promised, I want you to definitely keep it.

    約束した (plain past) + からには sets up the strong expectation.

Usage notes · 注意

  • Second clause carries resolve/duty/expectation (べきだ, つもりだ, なければならない, はずだ).
  • With nouns/な-adjectives use である before からには.
  • Register: neutral to formal; slightly more emotional/spoken than 以上は.

Commonly confused with

The JLPT rarely asks whether you recognise a pattern — it asks which of several similar patterns fits. These are the ones ～からには is tested against.

vs以上(は)

以上は is nearly synonymous but sounds more formal and logical; からには feels a bit more emphatic and emotionally committed.

vsうえは

うえは is stiff and mostly written, used after decisions/facts; からには is more versatile and common in everyday determined statements.
