Indicates that something happens exactly as stated, planned, or instructed, meaning 'in accordance with' or 'just as'. It stresses faithful correspondence to a model or expectation. As a suffix it becomes どおり (rendaku); after a verb it is とおり(に).
[Noun] + どおり(に) / [Verb plain form / Noun + の] + とおり(に)
計画どおりに工事が進んでいる。
Keikaku doori ni kouji ga susundeiru.
The construction is progressing exactly as planned.
Noun 計画 + どおりに shows faithful correspondence to the plan (rendaku).
先生が言ったとおりに書いてください。
Sensei ga itta toori ni kaite kudasai.
Please write exactly as the teacher said.
Verb 言った + とおりに follows a verb, so no rendaku occurs.
結果は予想どおりだった。
Kekka wa yosou doori datta.
The result was just as expected.
予想 + どおり used predicatively, meaning 'exactly as anticipated'.
• Rendaku: noun-suffix form is どおり (計画どおり); after a verb use とおり (言ったとおり). • に is often optional when used adverbially before a verb. • Common set nouns: 予定どおり, 期待どおり, 思ったとおり.
The JLPT rarely asks whether you recognise a pattern — it asks which of several similar patterns fits. These are the ones ~どおり(に) is tested against.
ように expresses a purpose or a loose likeness ('so that / like'), while どおり means strict, exact correspondence to a plan or instruction.
にしたがって means 'following / as ~ proceeds' with a sense of gradual change, whereas どおり stresses precise conformity to a fixed model.
