A versatile marker meaning "even X", a soft "~ or something" suggestion, or — with a question word — a blanket "any-" assertion.
[Noun] でも / [Question Word] + でも
そんなこと、子供でも分かります。
Sonna koto, kodomo demo wakarimasu.
Even a child understands that.
子供 (child) + でも (even).
いつでも電話してください。
Itsu demo denwa shite kudasai.
Please call me anytime.
いつ (when) + でも = anytime.
コーヒーでも飲みませんか?
Koohii demo nomimasen ka?
Would you like to drink coffee or something?
でも softly suggests an option without being forceful.
• The Universal Multiplier: [Question word] + でも + [Positive Verb] creates "any-" — 誰でも (anyone), 何でも (anything), どこでも (anywhere). • Contrast: も + Negative means "none", while でも takes a POSITIVE verb to mean total inclusion ("any").
The JLPT rarely asks whether you recognise a pattern — it asks which of several similar patterns fits. These are the ones でも is tested against.
Sentence-initial でも is a conjunction meaning "but/however" (でも、高いです). The particle でも here attaches to a noun/question word for "even/any".
何でも食べる = I eat anything (positive); 何も食べない = I eat nothing (negative). でも pairs with a positive verb, も with a negative verb.
