右 (right) and 左 (left) are relative position nouns. Like other spatial nouns, they attach to a reference point with the particle の.
[Anchor Object] + の + 右/左 (+ に for existence, or 右/左 + に + verb for direction)
銀行の右に郵便局があります。
Ginkou no migi ni yuubinkyoku ga arimasu.
There is a post office to the right of the bank.
銀行の右 (the bank's right) + に (place of existence) + 郵便局があります (a post office exists)
次の角を右に曲がってください。
Tsugi no kado o migi ni magatte kudasai.
Please turn right at the next corner.
次の角を (the next corner, path marked by を) + 右に (toward the right) + 曲がってください (please turn)
駅の左にコンビニがあります。
Eki no hidari ni konbini ga arimasu.
There is a convenience store to the left of the station.
駅の左 (the station's left) + に (place of existence) + コンビニがあります (a convenience store exists)
• Structural identity: 右/左 behave grammatically just like 上, 下, 中 — they are spatial nouns needing の. • Direction of motion: use に to mark the target direction: 右に曲がる (turn to the right). • Stroke-order note: 右 and 左 begin differently — 右 starts with the short slanting stroke (ノ) then the horizontal; 左 starts with the horizontal then the slant. (Stroke-order data should be re-validated by Debug/Testing.)
