～ほど～ない — Nothing Compares
Expresses that something is 'not as … as' the standard given, and by extension that nothing surpasses that standard. In the pattern 〜ほど〜ない, the ほど element is the benchmark, and the compared thing falls short of it. With Xほど…ものはない it means 'nothing is as … as X'.
Structure
[Noun／Verb plain] + ほど + [~ない]
Examples
今年の冬は去年ほど寒くない。
Kotoshi no fuyu wa kyonen hodo samuku nai.
This winter is not as cold as last year.
ほど sets last year as the benchmark, and 寒くない says this year falls short of it.
彼ほど親切な人はいない。
Kare hodo shinsetsu na hito wa inai.
There is no one as kind as he is.
ほど…はいない makes him the benchmark that no one else reaches.
健康ほど大切なものはない。
Kenkō hodo taisetsu na mono wa nai.
Nothing is as important as health.
ほど…ものはない establishes health as the ultimate standard that nothing exceeds.
• Register: neutral, common in speech and writing. • Xほど〜ものはない / 〜はいない is a set superlative-like pattern ('nothing/no one is as … as X'). • The predicate must be negative (〜ない).
Commonly confused with
The JLPT rarely asks whether you recognise a pattern — it asks which of several similar patterns fits. These are the ones ～ほど～ない is tested against.
vs ～より
より makes a direct 'more than' comparison in positive sentences; ほど〜ない states one thing falls short of a benchmark.
vs ～くらい／ぐらい
くらい can indicate approximate degree; ほど〜ない specifically compares against a standard the subject does not reach.
